Quit Drinking And Learn To Relax
Quitting drinking and becoming more relaxed might sound impossible. After all, one of the most common reasons people reach for alcohol is the belief that it helps them unwind after a long day or during times of stress.
But here’s what our members discovered:
Alcohol doesn’t relieve stress — it numbs it.
And when the numbing wears off, you get the stress back tenfold, along with anxiety, lethargy and a foggy mind.
If you’re exploring how to stop drinking, one of the most powerful steps you can take is to build a list of healthy ways to cope with everyday pressures without the automatic drink-in-hand response. Thousands of our most stressed-out members eventually realised a shocking truth:
Alcohol was the cause of their stress, not the solution.
The real trick to a calmer, more resilient life is to quit drinking and build new, science-backed “alcohol-free” strategies for relaxation.
Here are three to get you started — and you’ll find many more inside the OYNB e-book, community and daily emails.
Exercise
Get outside. Breathe fresh air. Shift your environment.
When problems start to weigh you down, even a short change of scene can snap your mind into a new state. This doesn’t need to be a 10-mile run — a gentle walk through a nearby park is enough.
Movement is a proven stress reliever, and being outdoors gives your body a healthy dose of daylight and vitamin D.
Simple. Effective. Free.
Music
Music works like instant therapy for the mind — if you choose intentionally.
Need to calm down? Choose something slow and soothing.
Feeling tense or frustrated? Turn up something loud and energetic.
And yes, you absolutely can dance.
Sober dancing counts — and it’s surprisingly liberating.
Mindfulness
Meditation is one of the most powerful ways to reset your nervous system while giving up alcohol. It helps regulate stress, improves focus and lifts overall mood.
If you’re new to it, apps like Headspace are a brilliant place to start — they make mindfulness simple, approachable and surprisingly enjoyable.
Trust us: this makes a real difference.
At OneYearNoBeer we’re constantly exploring new ways to help.
If you’ve found a strategy that helps you relax without alcohol, share it in the forums or the Facebook community — your experience could inspire someone else on the same journey.
Good luck on your alcohol-free adventures,
Andy
