Two men, both in black shirts, stand in a room by curtains. The left has a beard; the right looks serious. Wooden table and chairs are visible.

When I First Tried to Quit Drinking – What I Discovered

When I first attempted to quit drinking, I quickly realised something frustrating: there was nothing out there for someone like me — someone who was simply tired of alcohol, wanted a break, wanted clarity, but didn’t want to be labelled.

Every website, every questionnaire, every “help” resource seemed to point toward the same conclusion:

“Maybe you’re an alcoholic.”

But I knew that wasn’t the case.Still — I couldn’t seem to stop. And that contradiction confused me for a long time. At moments, I even started questioning myself, wondering if maybe I should accept the label.

Everything changed when life unexpectedly handed me a gift: gardening leave.Nine months of space.Nine months without deadlines, meetings, client events, or the constant pressure to drink socially.

And during those months, I stopped drinking — and the truth revealed itself.

I had no physical dependence.None.What I did have was a life, career, and social image built around alcohol.

In my world, I was the “big drinking fun guy.”It was part of my identity.Part of my reputation.Part of what people expected from me.

And every time that image was threatened, I caved. Not because I craved alcohol —but because I craved acceptance.

That’s when it finally clicked:

The pressure wasn’t internal. It was social.

The moment that environment disappeared, the “need” disappeared with it.

And That’s Why OYNB Was Created

We wanted to build something for people like me.People who aren’t physically dependent, but who struggle because of habits, identity, social pressure, and expectation.

A challenge that gives you:

  • an excuse to take a break

  • a way to test your relationship with alcohol

  • a shield from social stigma

  • a structure to prove to yourself that you are in control

If you’re not an alcoholic — but still frustrated that drinking feels hard to stop —this is your invitation.

Try the One Year No Beer challenge.Test the link.Remove the pressure. And prove to yourself that you have full control.

Sign up, choose your start date — today, tomorrow, next week — it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you begin.

A Gentle but Important Note

If you feel you may have developed a strong physical dependence, we urge you to seek professional help.OYNB is an incredible catalyst for behaviour change — but physical addiction requires medical support.

There is no shame in that. There is only courage in seeking help.
