Where Have All My “Alcohol Free” Super Powers Gone?

Having just spent the last few weeks on my alcohol-free adventures…

Travelling from Singapore to Houston and back to London again, I have championed my ability to look jet lag in the face and laugh.

I also rarely ever get sick. I cannot remember the last time I even had a cold.

The alcohol-free force is strong in me.

That was until earlier this week when I returned home from Houston. At 3:30 am I was still trying to sleep. Like Superman knee deep in kryptonite, I felt powerless. Finally, I got a few hours and I woke with a stinking cold!

Where had my AF powers gone?

I was really disappointed. I was not supposed to get a cold or lose my magical ability to switch time zones without any lag.

It reminds me of the first time I lost my temper having spent 8 weeks on a mindfulness-based stress relief course. It totally stressed me out.

How could I possibly lose my temper?

Where was my bloody mindfulness when I needed it?

On reflection, I think we are all a little guilty of this type of thinking and it is something I notice in the groups quite a lot.

Someone could be on day 8 or day 89 and they don’t feel energised, motivated or full of life.

They are confused — how can this be?

How is it that after transforming their life for the better they still, on the odd occasion, wake up feeling low?

In reality, this is the ebb and flow of life. It has nothing to do with being alcohol-free or performing mindfulness daily.

Sometimes we don’t feel on top form.

Sometimes we lose our temper.

This will not change, no matter how much we meditate or stay alcohol-free.

So go easy on yourself. If some days you don’t feel on top of the world — so be it. You can bet that you will feel great again pretty soon after.

The key point

Mindfulness and staying alcohol-free are:

  • increasing your good days

  • limiting the bad

So if you’re like me and your alcohol-free powers are tested and fail – dust yourself off and look forward to a brighter tomorrow and day after.
