Find it hard to get stuff done during your busy week?

Got a list of tasks the length of your arm? It can be daunting heading into another busy week with so much to do. Even with the best intentions it can be tricky to fit everything in—but it’s even harder when we start to procrastinate, make excuses and avoid it all.

If this sounds familiar, here are some simple ways to make productivity feel a little easier and a lot more manageable.

Tips to help make being productive easier

  • Simplify your to-do list

  • Start with the thing you don’t want to do

  • Plan rewards for getting stuff done

  • Have a plan B in mind

  • Listen to your natural energy cycles

Simplify your to-do list

First things first: don’t overcomplicate your to-do list. Of course it’s going to feel overwhelming and unappealing if you’ve got hundreds of items to tick off. Instead, prioritise what actually needs to get done this week.

You can also break bigger tasks into smaller, bite-sized steps. For example, “sort the house out” will probably sit on your list for weeks because you need a huge chunk of time to do it. Break it down into specific actions like “reorganise wardrobe” or “clean bathroom”. Once you tick off one small task, you build momentum for the next—until the “mammoth” task is done almost without noticing.

Start with the thing you don’t want to do

We all have that one task we keep dodging. It’s not fun—but it’s the one that should move straight to the top of your list.

If you keep pushing it back, it hangs over you all week and feeds procrastination. By tackling it first, you lift that weight off your shoulders and free up mental space for everything else.

This works for exercise too. If you schedule a workout first thing in the morning, or on a Monday to set the tone for the week, you’re more likely to carry a positive mindset into the rest of your day.

Plan rewards for getting stuff done

Being productive doesn’t have to be all work and no play. If there are tasks you’re really not looking forward to, plan a reward for afterwards.

Maybe you’re clearing out clothes and dropping a bag at the charity shop—could you stop at a nearby café for a treat afterwards? Or pair a boring errand with something you enjoy, like browsing your favourite store.

Small rewards turn tasks from “have to” into “do this, then I get that”, which can be a powerful motivator when your energy is low.

Have a plan B in mind

Sometimes the day just doesn’t go to plan. The place you need to visit is closed, the thing you need is sold out, or the person who promised to help has to cancel. Life happens.

Rather than letting this derail the whole day, have a plan B ready. When something falls through, go back to your list and ask, “What else can I move forward right now?”. Switching to another task helps you keep your momentum instead of giving up on the day altogether.

Listen to your natural energy cycles

We’d all love to be productive on demand, but energy doesn’t always line up neatly with our schedules. Where you have some flexibility, try to work with your natural rhythms instead of against them.

If you’re more alert and focused in the evening, batch certain tasks for later in the day. If you’re an early bird, use your morning peak to tackle the most important items before your afternoon slump hits.

You know your body better than anyone—when you respect your natural energy cycles, you’re likely to get more done in less time, and feel better doing it.

Let’s be productive and feel good

Whatever mindset hacks work for you, use them. Make your routines work in your favour, not against you. You have everything you need to move those tasks forward—it’s just about taking the first step.

And if you’ve got any tried-and-tested productivity tips of your own, share them with the community and keep the inspiration flowing.
