If a full-time working mom with 3 young girls in quarantine during a pandemic can do it, anyone can!
I have been a social drinker most of my adult life, and as a very social person, there were rarely occasions without alcohol. People almost expected it from me: if I was there, we were having drinks.
For years, I was always “fun” when drinking. But over the last few years, as 2019 brought a series of painful events – including my oldest daughter being diagnosed with a rare disease – my relationship with alcohol shifted. I started reaching for it too often, for all the wrong reasons, and I eventually slid into a deep depression.
I realised very quickly that alcohol and depression do not mix, and something had to change.

Finding OYNB
I’d seen OYNB ads on Facebook throughout 2019 and felt curious for a long time.
In January 2020, I finally decided to join. My original plan was simple:take the 28-day challenge as a reset.
Honestly, even that felt impossible at the time.
But once I joined the OYNB community, I was amazed at how many people had stories just like mine. The 28 days flew by. The support was uplifting, kind and completely non-judgemental.
Because of that support, it was an easy decision to extend to 90 days, and then ultimately to the full 365, without any hesitation.
Breaking the stigma
There is such a strong stigma around seeking help for anything in your life – especially when it comes to alcohol.
Many people see asking for help as a weakness
There’s a belief that only people who have hit “rock bottom” need support
And that the only option is AA
This simply isn’t true.
That’s the beauty of OYNB:there is another option, and it can help a wide range of drinkers, from “grey area” to heavy.
It can feel hard to make that first jump. But once you do, you realise you are part of a much larger community, and there is zero shame in wanting to improve your life – whether that leads to complete abstinence or healthier moderation.
The real goal is to change your relationship with alcohol, and OYNB supports you however your journey unfolds.
The alcohol-free benefits
By the end of my first 28-day challenge, I was already seeing clear improvements:
My energy levels increased
The quality of my sleep improved dramatically
By the end of 90 days, I had:
Lost over 15 lbs
Felt more stable, more awake and more engaged in my daily life
Now, at over 6 months alcohol-free, I have:
Lost over 25 lbs (and still losing)
Far better mental fitness
Confidence that has skyrocketed
Anxiety that is almost non-existent
The biggest gift has been mental presence.
I am truly present with my three daughters. Alcohol creates a fog that can linger for days – and living without that fog is life-changing. The mental clarity you gain without alcohol is a genuine, tangible joy.
Living alcohol-free in a world built around drinking
I started OYNB thinking it was just a 28-day reset. But the benefits were so undeniable that I kept going toward the full year.
With OYNB’s support, this journey has been nowhere near as difficult as I imagined. Yes, some days are harder than others – but it is more than possible.
I’ve been to:
Countless get-togethers where drinks were flowing
Two full vacations during my challenge
…and I haven’t felt left out at all.
I keep a few non-alcoholic options on hand for moments of temptation, which helps a lot. I’ve realised that it’s often the ritual I crave – not the alcohol itself.
It’s encouraging to see how much the world is changing too. Even liquor stores are expanding their NA ranges. There are now so many alcohol-free options, and I’ve enjoyed exploring them.
Now I can enjoy the taste and ritual of a drink, without:
The fog
The anxiety spikes
The imminent hangover
It’s a win-win.

There is nothing to lose
“If a full-time working mom with 3 young girls in quarantine during a pandemic can do it, anyone can.”
I would recommend OYNB to anyone who has ever questioned their relationship with alcohol:
If you wonder whether you’re drinking too often
If you’d like to lose a few pounds
If you feel stuck in a cycle you can’t quite break
For some, it might sound simple to “just stop”. But our entire world is built around alcohol – every celebration, every commiseration, every social event – and it’s hard to step away from that without proper support.
Even if your goal is just to cut back, OYNB can help.
It is absolutely worth investing in yourself and seeing what happens when you remove alcohol from the equation.
I can say with complete confidence:
My life has improved infinitely because of this one decision
I am a better mother, partner, friend and colleague
I finally feel like I am living, not just coping
And if I can do this – as a full-time working mom of three young girls, in quarantine, during a global pandemic – you can too.
