I have loved the support I have received throughout this challenge

“I have loved the support I have received throughout this challenge and I do not think I would have made it this far if I hadn’t joined.”

Before OYNB: my relationship with alcohol

I was a regular drinker, averaging around 20 units a week.

  • A gin and tonic while I was cooking

  • Drinks with friends at the weekend

When my close friend died in August last year, my drinking escalated into a month-long bender. I could see that alcohol wasn’t helping my grief – and it certainly wasn’t helping my relationship with my children.

Alongside the hangovers came:

  • Intense guilt

  • Reduced patience

  • Low tolerance for the people around me

Something had to change.

Starting my OYNB challenge

When I joined the OYNB Alcohol-Free Challenge, I wasn’t sure how I would get on.

To get through the early cravings, I leaned on several tools:

  • The OYNB Facebook group for advice and reassurance

  • Quit-lit audiobooks

  • Alcohol-free drinks (especially AF beer, which I genuinely enjoy)

I even had my 40th birthday party during my 90 days. I was so excited and hyper that I didn’t need a drink at all – and the next morning I woke up fresh and ready to celebrate with my family.

The benefits I have experienced

The biggest benefit for me has been sleep.

  • Falling asleep naturally

  • Sleeping deeply

  • Waking up fresh-faced and ready to go

I also had my over-40 health check recently, and because I don’t drink, my risk of heart disease is under 1%. That felt like a huge win.

The OYNB Challengers Facebook group has been a quiet but powerful support system. I didn’t always post or actively engage, but:

  • Reading other people’s posts

  • Watching them support one another

…helped me feel less alone and kept me moving forward.

What’s next?

Now I can confidently say: I don’t drink alcohol.

The changes I’ve noticed:

  • I’m far more engaged with life

  • I’m not clock-watching, waiting for 5pm so I can have a gin

  • There’s no “Mummy drinks wine” culture in the house

  • I have more patience and tolerance – with my family and in general

On nights out, I don’t need alcohol to keep me going. I’m often the last one out at night and the first one up in the morning – and I actually enjoy it more this way.

I truly have loved the support I’ve received throughout this challenge, and I don’t think I would have made it this far without OYNB and the community.

I’d recommend it to anyone.
