Happy (AF) Thanksgiving y’all…

Since we are a multicultural group, we wanted to give a shout-out to our North-American members and also recognise the Thanksgiving holiday as a key trigger point for many of our members to ‘get plowed’.

But first, since we’re on the topic of Thanksgiving, we want to allow ourselves the self-indulgent opportunity to tell you the top 3 things we are thankful for…

1. YOU LOT

That’s right — top of the list is you.

We are VERY thankful that you are the special bunch that you are.

Giving up the sauce for any stretch of time is a herculean undertaking, and your dedication, honesty and passion to help others is genuinely inspirational. Spending time in the groups is heart-warming.

We don’t say it enough — thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.

2. Technology

A weird one, yes — but absolutely true.

We are incredibly thankful that we live in a world of web-based wonderfulness. Without the tech that supports us (and you), none of this would be possible. It connects, supports, inspires and empowers this entire community.

3. Timing

A comic would tell you that their whole world is timing — same goes for us.

If we tried to do this ten years ago, it would have fallen flat on its arse and gone broke in the process.

But the time is right now. People are finally challenging their relationship with alcohol. Entire waves of younger generations are choosing different paths than many of us did.

Now… let’s talk turkey (I’m enjoying this).

Thanksgiving is the Everest of family occasions in the U.S. Please “reach out” (another favourite Americanism) to our OYNB members in the land of the free — they may need your emotional support to get through this one.

Top 5 Tips for Surviving Thanksgiving…

1. Affirmations

Find your mantra.

“I will not drink.”

“Drunk Uncle Terry will not get to me.”

“I am alcohol-free.”

Whatever works — repeat it. Affirmations are powerful.

2. Buddy Up

There is always someone who will have your back — a sibling, parent, cousin.

Remember: the threat can come from all directions (including internal!).

A buddy helps you dodge triggers and stay grounded.

3. Visualisation

Picture yourself waking up hangover-free on Black Friday.

Have something to look forward to—

… Being smug at breakfast?

… Watching everyone reach for their third coffee while you’re fresh from a morning run?

Whatever works — use it.

4. Be Thankful You Are AF

Simple but essential.

Wherever you are on your AF path, be proud.

Tell people. Own it.

Confidence makes you bullet-proof to family pressure.

5. Load Up on Alternatives

AF beer, AF bubbly — the options are endless.

And remember: placebos work 33% of the time, so use that to your advantage.

Most cravings vanish once you’ve got something AF in your hand (plus a huge glass of water, because most cravings = thirst).

In the spirit of Thanksgiving…

As the Pilgrim said to the Indian (probably… maybe… okay, I’m making this up now):

Be good to others. Be good to yourself.

Peace out.

(Oh god, I hope I haven’t offended anyone?)
