Not sure how to spend your time this summer? Here’s some sun-splashed inspiration that doesn’t revolve around alcohol.
Whether you’re travelling or staying close to home, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the season with a clear head. You’ll prove to yourself (and everyone around you) that you can have just as much fun – and often get even more out of your days – without a drink in hand.
Be a tourist in your own city
Many of us live in or near incredible places with rich histories, beautiful architecture and interesting stories, yet never really explore them because we’re “local”.
Take a day (or a weekend) to see your area through fresh eyes:
Look up free walking routes, heritage trails or “top sights” lists for your town or nearest city.
Visit museums, galleries or public spaces you’ve never stepped into before.
Challenge yourself to photograph as many landmarks as possible in one day.
If you have a bit of budget, you could:
Join a walking, bus, ghost or street food tour.
Book a table at a restaurant known for a local speciality.
Support small businesses with activities like pottery painting, craft workshops or a show at a local comedy club or theatre.
You might be surprised how much there is to discover right on your doorstep.
Set yourself an outdoor challenge
If the weather is kind where you are, make the most of it by setting a simple outdoor goal for the season.
Depending on where you live, you could:
“Collect” local hills or viewpoints and tick them off one by one.
Try open-water swimming, paddleboarding or another water sport at a nearby lake, river or beach.
Join a local hiking group or plan a longer trail you can build up to over a few weekends.
Go on a horse or pony trek, or explore a new cycling route.
If you prefer something gentler, make it your mission to find the perfect picnic spot, sunset viewpoint or reading corner in nature.
Time outside in fresh air is good for mood, sleep and overall wellbeing – and it’s a great way to create new alcohol-free rituals.
Organise a day trip
Day trips are perfect when you want the focus to be on the activity, not on drinking. They also make it much easier to stick to an alcohol-free commitment without feeling like you’re missing out.
Ideas include:
Visiting a nearby town, village or coastal spot you’ve never explored.
Heading to the beach for swimming, rock pooling or simply relaxing in the sun.
Booking something active like indoor climbing, a high-ropes course, zip-line park or bike hire.
Planning a family-friendly outing to a castle, transport museum, science centre, farm or animal park.
Daytime plans naturally come with less social pressure to drink, and you still get to make great memories and try new things.
Host a party your way
You don’t have to avoid socialising to avoid alcohol. You can host gatherings on your own terms – with alcohol-free options as the star of the show, or simply making drinks a small detail rather than the main event.
You could:
Host a garden barbecue or picnic with great food and a selection of alcohol-free drinks and mocktails.
Ask guests to bring a favourite board game or ice-breaker activity.
Set up a projector outside to watch a film, sports match or concert together.
Create a simple “mocktail bar” where people can mix their own drinks using juices, sodas, fresh fruit and herbs.
People remember the laughs, conversations and atmosphere far more than what was in their glass.
Keep boredom at bay
Taking a break from drinking does not mean life gets boring. In fact, with more energy, better sleep and clearer mornings, you often have more time and motivation to try new things.
Use this summer to:
Experiment with new hobbies you’ve never quite found time for.
Reconnect with old passions you used to love.
Mix low-key days at home with a few bigger adventures, so you stay balanced and rested.
However you choose to spend the season, the aim is simple: enjoy your time, protect your wellbeing and build memories you can fully remember and savour.
